F.A.Q.
Frequently Asked Questions
When your child is struggling, it’s natural to have questions — lots of them.
Below you’ll find clear, honest answers to the most common questions parents ask about my approach, the Barton Reading & Spelling System, and what to expect when we work together.
If you don’t see your question here, please reach out — I’m always happy to talk things through.
🧩 About the Barton Reading & Spelling System
The Barton System is a structured, multisensory program specifically designed for children with dyslexia and reading challenges. It teaches reading and spelling through sight, sound, touch, and movement — the way your child’s brain learns best.
Most schools teach reading as if every brain learns the same way. But for kids with dyslexia, that approach often misses key steps. Barton teaches every sound-symbol relationship explicitly, in a clear order, with no skipped skills — so nothing falls through the cracks.
Not at all. While it was created for students with dyslexia, it works beautifully for any bright child who’s struggling to read, spell, or gain confidence in language.
No — it actually reinforces it. Barton fills in the missing foundations so schoolwork becomes easier and less frustrating. I often coordinate with teachers to keep our goals aligned.
⏳ About Progress and Timeline
Most families notice “glimmers of hope” within the first 2–4 weeks — fewer tears, more willingness to try. By 2–3 months, you’ll usually see measurable progress, and by 6–12 months, many students are reading independently and confidently.
Absolutely. Many families come to me after trying multiple methods that didn’t work. The difference is that Barton was built specifically for the dyslexic brain — it’s structured, cumulative, and proven to work where others don’t.
That’s perfectly okay. Every child’s journey is unique. Some move quickly, others take more time. What matters most is steady forward movement, not speed.
You’ll see emotional changes first — less frustration, more confidence. Then you’ll notice academic ones: smoother reading, better spelling, stronger comprehension, and most importantly, renewed self-belief.
📚 About Sessions and Logistics
Most children benefit from 1–2 sessions per week, 45–60 minutes each. We’ll decide together what works best based on your child’s needs and your family’s schedule.
All sessions are held in my quiet, comfortable tutoring space — a warm, encouraging environment designed to help your child feel safe and focused.
Life happens! Just let me know as soon as possible, and we’ll reschedule. Consistency helps, but flexibility is always part of the plan.
Yes — summer is actually one of the best times for progress because children can focus without the added pressure of school homework.
My tutoring is focused on in-person instruction because Barton is hands-on and multisensory. However, if your family relocates, I’ll gladly help you find another qualified Barton tutor near your new home.
💛 About Emotional and Family Support
That’s very common at first. I talk about it right away, explaining that their brain just learns differently — not worse. Within a few sessions, most children are proud of their progress and look forward to coming.
Use positive language, such as:
“Your brain learns differently, and that’s okay. We’re just going to show it a new way to read.”
Avoid words like problem or fix — this is about empowerment, not repair.
Don’t force it. Break tasks into small pieces, celebrate effort, and stop before frustration sets in. I’ll give you specific strategies to keep home practice positive and low-stress.
Usually no — most kids focus better one-on-one. But you’ll always receive updates after each session so you know exactly how things are going and how to help at home.
Just a few short, positive moments a day are enough. Read to your child often, play word or sound games, and keep learning lighthearted. I’ll give you tailored ideas for at-home support.
Unfortunately, private tutoring usually isn’t covered by insurance. However, many families use HSA or FSA funds, and I provide itemized receipts if needed.
Yes — I offer flexible payment options and multi-session packages for families who prefer to plan ahead.
Because this isn’t a one-size-fits-all workbook or app. It’s one-on-one instruction with a certified Barton specialist who brings 40+ years of classroom and principal experience. You’re investing in expertise, personalization, and lasting change.
Ask any parent whose child can finally read with confidence. The transformation goes beyond academics — it’s about restoring joy, self-esteem, and opportunity. For most families, that’s priceless.
🧠 About Family and School Collaboration
Yes. I provide updates or documentation when helpful, and I’m happy to collaborate with teachers to ensure your child’s support is consistent at home and in the classroom.
Perfect — that means the school recognizes the need for support. Barton tutoring fits beautifully alongside those accommodations, helping your child use them more effectively.
That’s fine. A formal diagnosis isn’t required to start tutoring. If I suspect dyslexia or another reading difference, I can help guide you toward appropriate evaluations and next steps.
